Steven "Steve" Christy is a supporting character featured in the 1980 slasher film Friday the 13th. He was played by actor Peter Brouwer.

Christy served as an authoritative figure in the film and was one of eight people to be murdered by the sociopathic Pamela Voorhees.

Biography

Steve Christy was the son of David and Louise Christy. He grew up at his parents' resort, which was somewhere on the shores of Camp Crystal Lake.

Throughout the 1950s and 60s the camp became the site of several mishaps including a drowning incident in 1957. That was determined to be accidental, but in 1958 a male and female counselor were found stabbed to death. The camp was shut down afterwards. In 1962 Mr. and Mrs. Christy made an attempt to reopen, but a series of unexplained arson incidents thwarted the grand reopening.

Camp Crystal Lake developed the reputation of being jinxed and it wasn't long before the Christys were forced to shut the campground down for good. Sometime between 1962 and 1978, both Mr. and Mrs. Christy passed away, and the tragedies at their camp had taken a toll on the couple emotionally.

In 1978, Steve elected to reopen the camp. Over the year and into 1979, he hired various contractors, such as masons, plumbers, carpenters, and electricians to renovate the dilapidated summer camp. Most of the townsfolk thought he was crazy to invest so much time and money ($25,000) into this project. One local man named Enos, who knew of the earlier misfortunes, believed Steve was destined for the same fate as his parents, where he would die crazy and bankrupt.

Steve hired an assistant and camp counselor named Alice Hardy to work with him refurbishing the site. Steve and Alice grew close and began having an affair.

Their relationship was strained however, as Alice was still dealing with the remnants of a previous relationship in California. Steve elected not to get possessive, instead telling Alice if she did not find the work to her liking, she could resign from the camp and she could end the relationship peacefully.

Steve hired several more counselors to assist him in the work including Jack Burrell, Ned Rubenstein, Marcie Stanler, Brenda Jones, Bill Brown, and a cook named Annie Phillips.

On June 13th of that year, Steve left instructions with the group and left them alone so he could go into town in order to procure supplies.

That night, Steve stopped at a diner in Crystal Lake and told a waitress about the work he was doing at the campground. He referred to his hired hands as "babes in the woods".

On the way back, a terrible thunderstorm struck and Steve ran his jeep off the road. A police sergeant named Jack Tierney picked him up and drove him back to Camp Crystal Lake. Nearing the Crystal Lake property, Sgt. Tierney received a radio call about an accident nearby. He told Steve he would need to head there, to which Steve thanked him for the ride and said he could walk the remainder of the way.

When he arrived, he ran into Pamela Voorhees, a former employee of the campground and a friend of his parents. Pamela was the mother of Jason Voorhees, the boy who drowned in Camp Crystal Lake back in 1957.

Feeling betrayed by the notion of Steve re-opening the camp site, she committed herself towards killing everyone associated with the project.

She stabbed Steve in the stomach with a hunting knife then suspended his body upside down from a tree like a rag doll. Alice Hardy later found Steve hanging in the rain.

Notes and Trivia

  • The character of Steve Christy was created by director Sean S. Cunningham and writers Victor Miller and Ron Kurz.
  • Peter Brouwer was the oldest member of the cast of victims. He was thirty-five years old while filming Friday the 13th.
  • Steve Christy is the eighth victim of Pamela Voorhees and the sixth victim of the 1979 staff of Camp Crystal Lake.
  • Ironically, while Steve suffered a horrible death, it was not the same as how Enos predicted he would meet his parents' doom. While he was murdered, he was of sound mind and body until the last minute of life. While it was said he spent a lot of money on renovations of Camp Crystal Lake for the anticipated 1979 season ($25,000 having the same purchasing power as $97,216 in 2022) there was no sign he was in trouble with debt collectors or headed for bankruptcy court.
